July, Outdoor Grilling Season

It's outdoor grilling season! With summer right around the corner, let's talk about outdoor living. 'Staycation' trend is in! How about creating your own private oasis right in your backyard!

Here are a few things to consider when creating your backyard design.

First things first, what will this space be mostly used for? Will this be a space where you create memories with family and friends? Will your guest be showing up for weekend barbecues? Or do you need a space to come home to relax after long hours in the office or field? A quiet, calm, and tranquil place to meditate. How about a green, luscious, and aroma-filled garden where you can grow your own vegetation? A place where a novice or green thumb expert can plant and garden to their heart's content. Or maybe all of the above! If this sounds like your dream backyard oasis, you may be wondering, how can I do this?

I'll let you in on a little designer secret. If for example you chose all these three wonderful ideas and you are not sure where to start. Sketch! Start off with the location of your home and box out areas or sections that you wish to have in your backyard.

See the example below:

Notice that these are just plain squares on your design layout. When placing the areas, think about what is the first thing you want to see when stepping out into your backyard. Is it BBQ, the garden, or your meditation area? Next, once you decide on your designated areas, make a list of items you need and want in each space. What elements do you want to showcase? Is it your decorative rock waterfall, your built-in bbq, or do you want to soak in all the beauty in your new luscious garden? Once you have made a list for each section, think about the groundcover, does it need grass, decorative tiles, rockscapes, or concrete? Will certain areas require connections to water or gas? After you have figured out each area, sketch out the placement for the items in each section of your oasis.

Here is an example below.

Whatever you decide to put into your backyard, remember to think about the locations of each space, what is the overfall feeling you want to achieve, and what memories you want to create in your private oasis.
