October 2022, In the Spirit of Kitchen Renovations...

Spooky season has arrived and what better way to celebrate than with food! Pies, more specifically, yummy warm, flakey crust edge, right out of the oven, homemade pumpkin pies. Yes, pumpkins have officially entered our kitchens. Speaking of kitchens, let's talk about Kitchen trends. What's in this fall? Kitchen renovations of course! A time to spice up our kitchens and get ready for the holidays. Kitchens are the hub of the social scene, a place where family & friends gather, where conversation & drinks flow and food & memories are shared. Food is what brings us together and kitchen islands are a great place to start.

Let’s talk islands, islands add an extension to our kitchen area, and they make for great counter space. They are perfect for working in the kitchen and excellent for entertaining. It is an important staple to our homes, whether we entertain a small intimate dinner or host large boisterous happy guests. Whether you have your sink or stove top on them, deciding what appliance to place in your island is completely up to you. Maybe something to think about when deciding, is how much you use that appliance and what views you’ll be facing. Islands not only do they make your kitchen look beautiful but also offer great storage solutions, and who doesn’t mind lots of storage spaces?

Great organization is an important tool to have, especially in a kitchen with extremely high use. There are amazing soft-close pullout drawers, spice racks, cabinets with shelves, easy reach, pots & pan racks on pull out drawers. Wine coolers, under cabinet microwaves, and dishwashers can be neatly tucked inside the island, which are great locations for these appliances to hide. Most islands have standard outlets on the sides of them and can come in handy when plug in appliances are needed on that counter space. Countertops on the island are also a focal feature in kitchens, they can match the rest of the countertops or have a different slab that stands out. Your fabricator can cut the slab to whatever style you desire, whether it’s ogee edges all around or have a waterfall which adds another visual interest to your island.

Let’s not forget lighting! Another way to dress your island up is to add lighting along the toe kick, which creates for a more dramatic ambiance. Adding pendant lighting or track lighting above your island definitely adds life to your kitchen. Adding dimmers to your light fixtures can instantly add different moods. Another Kitchen must, cabinets, simply updating cabinets & hardware can be a major change in home renovations. Having your island standout from the rest of your kitchen is simple, choose a different color or stain to the cabinet and keep the same countertop as the rest of the space. Islands can also be at different height levels. For example, half of the island can be 36” standard counter height and the other half at bar height. Another option is just having a smooth surface with no transition at a standard 36” height all around.

Whether you transform and transition your old kitchen to a new modern and updated space, maybe adding an island will definitely create a new conversation going for your next dinner guests. There are many options to have in your kitchen and if you can’t decide or need some extra help and information, we will be happy to help you. ACM has done many kitchen renovations, including islands.
